I have read all Mary Wine's highlander stories and love her writing style. I don't normally read "steampunk" novels but since I enjoy this author and I find it good to read something a bit different now and then.Well this was certainly different. I didn't mind the steampunk aspect of the book or even the secret societies. Since I don't normally read this genre it was all new to me and since I had nothing to compare it to - I didn't find it lacking. What I did find it, was confusing - it was hard to keep track of who was who and who was good and who was bad.
I liked Janette and Darius - but again there was some confusion. We never learned why Darius joined the order or who it was he left behind. Also there is the trust issue - which started to get old real fast. And his constant "warning" her away nonsense - seriously I wanted to slap Darius. Then we have Janette's mother - whose problem was apparently solved by the end of the book - but I have no idea how.
There is obliviously going to be more books in the series Bion and Sophia for sure and I am guessing Lykos & Decima. I will probably read them but, I really prefer her highlander novels.

A Lady Can Never Be Too Curious Steam Guardian Mary Wine 9781402264801 Books Reviews
I really liked this book. I love the way the leading lady and her best friend buck tradition and ignorance. The leading lady stops hiding the fact she is an intelligent and free thinking WOMAN. Ready to read the next book in the series.
Hard to read. Did not connect with the characters. Not good explanations to explain events and inventions. Not believable. Did not enjoy reading this book. It was a book club read. Half the group gave it a so so, The other half did not like it.
I have not read Mary Wine's books before this one and I really enjoyed this book. It is a little different than what I usually read. Janette and Darius are two very strong characters. They have a strong connection and they try to stay apart. There is a strong cast of supporting characters good and bad. I recommend this book and can not wait for the next installment.
I've always enjoyed Mary Wine's books, but it seems as if she just ran out of steam at the end. When the ship collects the pair off the island, does she really expect the reader to believe that Janette was so liberated, she felt nothing upon boarding a ship full of men - unclothed? So many plots dropped or missed that it cheated the integrity of her story. I kept back-tracking to see if I had overlooked something. Sorry - this was a disappointment. She should really pull this book and rework the last part. Add another 100 pages if she needs to, but tie up some loose strings please.
As a reader of alternate history/steampunk and a fan of Mary Wine's historical romances, I had to read this book. I'm so glad I found it. At the end of the book I had to scratch my head because there were quite a few things that were not well explained, but....I really liked the story! The hero and heroine are made for each other...i.e. they debate a lot and then kiss and make up. There is lots of action and a good plot. The Illuminist Society vs. Helikeians will make for lots of drama in future books. This is pure escapism, no apologies, and I like it!
I ordered this when it came out, then must have forgotten about it because when I finally did pick it up, I couldn't put it down.
I just finished and am really itching to read the next one.
Great characters, really well constructed world, and a fast paced story. Loved it.
You get the taste of Victorian England before the author flips it over, twists it around again, and creates an alternative history full of science, equality, and open-mindedness. I never lost my sense of suspended disbelief through the descriptions of the technology, the political structure, and the entire lore of the Illuminists.
This book is a new favorite that I will re-read.
I enjoyed this book so much that I had to write a review, even though many of my previous reviews for other works have mysteriously disappeared.
This is an interesting read. It kept me engaged but I didn't really feel attached to any of the characters. The premise is interesting, but in a society where women are accepted there was still a lot of annoying alpha behavior from Darius. The goals of either side weren't really all that clearly defined. I'll read the next one since I have it already and see if I can make it through it.
