This book is about London rave party, drugs, domestic abuse and one person’s fight with her denial that love, much like LSD trip, could come in shapes it shouldn’t...
It’s dawn of the millennium and Olesya is feeling increasingly unapplied. She’d do anything to sample the old cool, - that elusive something of which London air is full, yet to which she never gets any closer. Or at least, that is not until she chances a date with Acid, who tells her about the scene where he thinks, he’s known as the ‘ultimate bad boy’ (‘soundboy’). With his appearance, Lesi finds herself in love not once but three times over with Acid the man, acid the drug and the 00’s rave party scene.
Spiralling in and out and all around, come legal and illegal parties which are full of ‘tunnels’ on a dance floor, fuelled by thumping Drum’n’Bass and the non-stop strobes. Acid and Olesya do their best to ensure that every LSD trip they have is music led, yet every curious interlude is only too welcome there are ‘Jib-Jobs’ and the strange moon; the re-occurring pyramids of knowledge in purple, and the forlorn Alice in Wonderland, who is thought to be Chinese; there are crab carpets which may not be visuals, the police who fails to search out their ‘stash’ and the voices over water which may be stuck in a ‘third dimension’.
Meanwhile, the bright colours which used to stroke Lesi’s mind are starting to grow darker. “I know how you look at other men when my back is turned. Admit that you’r a slut and I will leave you well alone.” Acid tells her yet again, and suddenly, from wondering which of her three loves top the list, Olesya turns to thinking about dangers of having more, when it comes to losing it and about the ways others in abusive relationships may have found the strength to leave. Would Lesi swap the world of beloved party drugs and flattering illusions for the confused crowd filled with other victims of domestic violence?
“Have some of this, cunt!” You spat at me. It was the second time someone had done it to me, the first being a bully hidden in a middle of my high school sentence. I could still remember the hate augmentation and the increased weight of it. But with you, it was less straightforward. Your spit was made of stuff enabling our past kisses. It felt more like rain on my cheeks.”
“...This is another mix, listen dis! Oh gosh Woahhh, ahhh,” the MC was on one again. “That's how we do it... Ya unnastan? ….Bad buoooy in da house… journey into da sound…” “There could only be one…” The music whispered into my ears, “the one, who keeps coming back.” Tripping or not, for a split second, there could be no question about it. Indeed, how could there ever be more than one at any one time?”
“...Looking at him, I slowly took off my clothes. The simplicity of unashamed undressing had a tendency to touch raw even in men who ‘didn’t do naff’ so I figured, it was bound to work for someone who tuned in to Ricky Martin. I guess, I was still hoping to see another side to David a little bit mean, a little bit corrupt, a little bit of something extra from which my own power was going to bounce, redundant. It was something like holding a scratch card, - what were the chances, and yet, until the last corner rubbed off, I could still strike gold.”
“...the more I tried to delve into its ‘moodiness’, the more I could see nothing but light-hearted slant on the steepest build ups in the music. It was as if LSD was trying to persuade me that black was white. Then I suddenly got it, caught on the joke as that particular ‘tangent’ went, LSD was simply pushing me away from the original and towards the opposite to any thought , idea or concept, successfully and all for the hell of it.”
“...I kept thinking why did I do it, all the running in the wrong direction? But nothing was ever without a reason. It was a bit like missing your turn on a motorway - the quicker you speed away from where you wanted to go, the quicker you will get there at the end."

As a result of a chance encounter `good girl' Olesya falls in love with Acid, who knows where to get drugs and also introduces her to the place he knows best - London rave scene. Before she knows it, Olesya is `hooked'. High more often than they are not, by the time she realises that something is not right with the love that they share, it seems, it's too late to get out.Through careful build up, the book lays out a poignant tale of Olesya's experience with emotional abuse, from the courage it takes to name it for what it is without bruises to show for it, throughout to the unexpected resolution. There were moments in a book where I had to stop and catch my breath - never mind king of `bad boys' this Acid is a true king of manipulation. How on earth will this girl get out?
On a lighter note, there are several absolutely fascinating accounts of Olesya and Acid's psychedelic experiences under the influence of LSD, ranging from quite philosophical to downright hilarious. Both main characters as well as supportive ones, especially Stanley, are drawn very well.
The narrative can sometimes be somewhat confusing, especially where the author embarks on describing the `construction' of dance music while under the influence of drugs and the theory behind the `bad boy' persona, which keeps cropping up in the connotations of the music. However, this being one of those hard to put down, emotionally involving page turners, where author brings you on their side from the word go in a way, that as a reader you are quite willing to overlook occasional `unpolished' section.
The reason why this is a 5* for me, is not only because I think that on a whole it's a well written, touching book, but also because the author approaches a very unusual, niche subject and rises to the challenge of translating it into the language of mainstream culture, skilfully transporting the reader into the world which very few of us would ever know about. Nice long read, and well worth it!
