H.P. Lovecraft was a brilliant writer of horror and science fiction stories. He was a master in creating a growing atmosphere of horror and foreboding in his works. The Whisperer in Darkness is, in my opinion, one of Lovecraft's best works. The story starts out slowly but gradually quickens its pace as the narrator describes his correspondence and interaction with a reclusive scholar in remote Vermont who believes he is threatened by an unseen presence. Lovecraft was known for creating a mythology involving ancient creatures and/or intelligences from other worlds and including aspects of this mythos in many of his works. The Whisperer in Darkness is one of the stories that includes aspects of this mythology. The narration in the CD is good. If you are a fan of H.P. Lovecraft or of interesting horror/science fiction stories in general, I think you will find this CD worth the price.Tags : The Whisperer in Darkness [Howard Phillips Lovecraft] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. LOVE LOVECRAFT STORIES, THESE WERE GOOD ONE MOSTLY
Excellent rendition. I enjoyed every moment of it. I really have no criticism of it and would buy it again if necessary. Great job.
Always a classic from the master of existential horror!
The story actually very good, but the editing / formatting of this ebook is terrible. Do yourself a favor and get yourself a different version.
Now, I had already read a fair bit of Lovecraft prior to purchasing this book, and like anyone who has done so, I know he can be a bit hit and miss. Well, rest assured, this is a collection of hits. Everything from the title story to The Call of Cthulhu (possibly his most famous work) to one of my favorites, At the Mountains of Madness, is contained in this volume. It would be an excellent purchase for someone looking to get into Lovecraft, or really just for anyone looking for a good collection of his works
A note on the volume itself quality-wise, it's slightly better than a mass market paperback (which is probably most of the other stuff you'll find at this price range). It's definitely seen a lot of use since I bought it, and though the plastic coating on the cover is coming up in a couple of places the printing is still pristine; it's a very good price for what you're getting in that arena.
I enjoyed the story, but the formatting is very poor. I also purchased "The Colour out of Space" by the same publisher, which had the same formatting issues, but was the best-formatted version of the story I could find for . Both stories have strange formatting, which causes every other line to consist of one or two words when the is held vertically, and for the text to be wrapped to the left 2/3 of the screen when held horizontally. The story isn't unreadable by any means, but this poor quality is very galling. On the one hand, it is only 99 cents for a short story, but on the other hand, I've purchased plenty of other short stories free of formatting errors for the same price.
A bit different Lovecraft novella. Science fiction horror rather than supernatural or Cuthulhu mythos horror. The story works pretty well if you can ignore that near the end, the narrator, Albert Wilmarth, proves to be gullible and foolish.
The introduction is very much a spoiler so I suggest that it be read after the story. There is also a short biographical sketch of Lovecraft.
